Trichophytic Closure

While performing the hair transplant procedure with FUT or strip method, one linear strip containing grafts from the safe zone of the donor area is taken out. This gap is stitched after extraction of the strip.

In the past, this sutured area used to appear as a long linear scar and that was highly disturbing. In order to hide this scar, patients would either keep long hair or wear hats. This scar would be visible when the patient got a short haircut or shaved off the head.

Now, with the advancement of science and technology, after the introduction of the trichophytic closure technique, FUT scar has become imperceptible. Now even hair stylists cannot find the scar if the strip of FUT is closed with trichophytic closure.

“Tricho” closure is a revolutionary closing technique, which allows the surgeon to improve or optimize the linear scar during FUT procedure. The objective of this technique is that the hair should eventually grow through the incision and the perceptibility of the scar is drastically reduced.

With the trichophytic closure technique, the doctor trims one of the wound edges (upper or lower), allowing the edges to overlap each other and the hair to grow directly through the donor scar. This can improve the appearance of the donor area in patients who keep their hair very short.

Introduction of this scarless technique was done by Dr Mario Marzola who conducted a research on his patients. The researcher closed two different scars with two different techniques, namely the trichophytic closure method and the traditional closure method. It was then found that after few months the visibility of scars from the trichophytic closure method was insignificant. Some doctors believe that this method will result in having an undetectable scar, while others who practice this method say that this is a technique to minimise the visibility of the previous scar. 

Having a scar on your body may result in having low self confidence, especially for the younger ones. It becomes important to get rid of them in case they are evidently visible to all. The scarless treatment done via the trichophytic closure method can also be used by patients who have already undergone any hair transplant surgery but have a scar left on their scalp, this method will help them camouflage the scar. Also, trichophytic closure can be used as a medium for hair transplant repair and correction work.
